One of the challenges with tango for a leader, there are many, is that it's
00:06
difficult to know where her axis is. And so I'll give you two ideas.
00:11
So idea number one is that at the end of the step,
00:15
you want to feel if she's, I'm going to say leaning any direction, towards you,
00:19
away, whatever.
00:20
Do you want me to lead?
00:21
No, it's fine. And feel that. And the analogous way to feel that would be sort of
00:25
like balancing a chair on one leg. And so if I'm here with a chair and you want to
00:31
know, is the chair on its axis? Well, how do you know?
00:34
And the answer is you feel it pulling that way, in this case.
00:37
And so then I move it back, and then I feel, oh, I went too far.
00:41
And then eventually you can feel
00:44
where it feels, and then you try to say, okay.
00:46
And you try to have it be balanced and not fall too fast.
00:49
That was amazing.
00:52
So it's a funny thing, but that's a great exercise to develop the sensitivity
00:56
through touch.
00:56
I think that's one of David's superpowers.
00:58
That chair didn't really even want to fall.
01:02
And so as an example, I'm going to be very off balance and I'm here, and
01:08
so if she were holding me, I'm clearly off balance.
01:11
Hold me with your hands, like around my shoulders. Yeah.
01:15
Like this. Yeah. Great. Put me on my axis slowly.
01:20
And so she feels that at the beginning, rewind, at the beginning, there's forward
01:24
pressure. Oh, my partner's off balance. Don't just support them. Put them back.
01:32
So we're looking for the place where there's no forward pressure or backward
01:35
pressure in that example.
01:37
Okay, so that's the first thing. That's an awareness exercise.
01:39
But the second thing is once you get close enough, let's say here, it's mostly
01:44
close enough,
01:46
get out of the way, because leaders, you're not going to get it 100% right.
01:49
You're going to get it 99% right, and you want to let your follower move themself
01:53
the last one.
01:54
Yeah, the last little bit.
01:56
So in some sense, at the beginning, I said, "We're going." And I say, "Oh, where is
02:00
it? You tell me. Oh, you like that? I like that, too." And then we take a step.
02:05
Where is it? Oh, it's there. Okay. And so I want you to see that at the beginning
02:08
of the motion, there's power and clarity, and at the end, I'm just being here for
02:12
her.
02:13
Yeah. He's kind of waiting, giving me a space in which I can find my perfect axis.
02:17
And if I do the reverse, this is the bad.
02:20
I'd say, "Oh, we're here." Then it goes right here, and then it goes right here.
02:23
Yeah.
02:24
And I gave her, there's no room. You're staying inside this prison.
02:28
That was a very good bad, David.
02:30
Let's end with the good, though. No, let's end with the good. So we say, "Let's go.
02:34
Where would you like to be? Oh, that's-- Oh, I like that, too." That's how you end.
