Another story that we tell ourselves as followers is that we just follow.
00:04
The leader will do stuff and make it happen, and we just follow, and that's not
00:09
right. We actually, each of us need to own our own dance, and the idea
00:15
that, oh, I can only dance well if I dance with somebody wonderful that's really
00:19
great. That's not right. In fact, my dance lives
00:25
inside me. Your dance lives inside you, and you take it with you no matter who you
00:30
dance with.
00:32
So let's do a demo. If I'm going to be following and I'm-
00:35
I'm going to lead. I wasn't very good at doing the wrong.
00:39
So here's the wrong. I'll follow, and let's play pretend some song is playing.
00:43
Whatever. Tango Du Por. ♪ Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, di, da, da, da♪
00:49
And as this is happening, I want you to notice that I'm following, but I don't

have, I'm going to call it, any life or conviction in my body.

01:17
Oh, yeah. That one made me want to go slower.
01:19
Right. And so there, I took ownership of my dance, and this is what we want
01:24
followers to do. How do they do that?
01:28
Okay. That's a trick question. So you have this idea of who you are as a dancer,
01:34
and you think that idea into your body, particularly here,
01:39
and you grab your strength there, and you keep it available pretty much no matter
01:44
what the leader does.
01:46
Also, you need to have an opinion. If a song is playing,
01:50
how does that manifest in your body?
01:53
Hmm.
01:54
So as a follower, we have more leeway than it seems like we would in terms of
01:59
letting our body land and letting our body into the music.
02:03
And so let's say there's a different song.
02:05
♪ Ya, dum, ba, dum, ba, da, da, dun, da, di, ya, da,

02:17
imposing on her.
02:17
Not at all.
02:18
But what came out was her interpretation of the dancing to that sound.
02:22
That's right.
