- One of the ideas in tango is that you need to go through-- or not ideas.
- 00:04
- The things that are super useful is to go through your partner as a leader, and
- 00:08
- actually as a follower, too. And so as an example, if I wanted to push her back, if
- 00:14
- I do this,
- 00:16
- she's not going back. And you can say, "Why is she not going back?" Well, it's
- 00:18
- because she's not there. She's over here. And if I do this, then she does go back.
- 00:24
- And so from a direction perspective,
- 00:29
- a lot of it first is aim. So for example, if I want you to walk backwards and I do
- 00:33
- this, I'm a little off-kilter, and so that will be diffuse.
- 00:38
- You know, "Whoa, go backwards." Doesn't make you feel like you want-
- 00:41
- No, I'm a lot off-kilter. Doing it subtly wrong.
- 00:43
- Here's subtly off wrong. Go backwards.
- 00:46
- And that happens all the time.
- 00:49
- But if you're right there and I do this, go backwards, then you
- 00:54
- really feel the pressure, I'm going to say, coming towards you.
- 00:58
- So for example, it's very common for a leader to go a little bit to the follower's
- 01:03
- right side, his left side, right here.
- 01:06
- And so if I go forward like this,
- 01:09
- she felt it, but my energy is this way, not through her.
- 01:15
- And so then if I want her to go backwards, it's much better for me to be here
- 01:20
- through her, instead of here through her.
- 01:26
- So a lot of these things are tools
- 01:30
- to make us able to be on earthily together, which is one of the goals in tango.
- 01:35
- So there's two things I want you to put your mind on.
- 01:38
- One is aim, which is what we were just talking about, and then the other is the
- 01:45
- pressure being on your hands in the direction you want.
- 01:48
- Meaning, if my partner is here, if I do this-
- 01:54
- That's an extreme
- 01:54
- ... she's not feeling it because my hands aren't moving through her, and so I'm
- 01:58
- putting my pressure here, in this case, through the hand.
- 02:01
- Or if I'm on the side,
- 02:04
- I could have a little bit here.
- 02:06
- I lead like that.
- 02:07
- Here
- 02:09
- and here.
- 02:11
- And it's also her hand on my shoulder right now.
- 02:14
- Now-
- 02:14
- My hand on his shoulder is going-- I'm leaning forward a little bit.
- 02:18
- So this is, I'm conscious how each point, how my left hand can push her back, but
- 02:24
- also
- 02:26
- how my right hand can push her back, but also
- 02:30
- how my
- 02:33
- right, I'm going to call it bulging bicep- ... can push her back.
- 02:38
- But so at each point of contact, we can be really clear how we get that direction
- 02:42
- of pressure and then take that through your partner.
- 02:46
- I have one thing to add, and it's a little bit frou-frou, but it helps if you have
- 02:50
- in your mind a very clear idea of exactly where you want to go, and then if you put
- 02:56
- your whole self to going that way.
Lead - Going through your partner
