Gancho - Variation Principles - Followers

- 00:00
- Followers as you're now saying, well,
- 00:04
- a gunshot can happen anytime.
- 00:06
- How does that change what I do?
- 00:08
- In some ways, the answer is it doesn't.
- 00:10
- You know, you have the same, uh, useful principles,
- 00:13
- but it's helpful for you to know first,
- 00:16
- when is a ganjo possible?
- 00:18
- And the short answer is, you,
- 00:20
- you have three steps in tango, right?
- 00:22
- You have forward side and back forward step.
- 00:24
- There's no gancho side step.
- 00:26
- You might get a gancho back step, you might get a gancho.
- 00:30
- So every time that you step, uh, let's say side right here,
- 00:34
- you're going side, you might say, oh, there might be a here.
- 00:39
- And then every time you step back you say, oh,
- 00:42
- there might be a gun show there.
- 00:44
- That's thought number one.
- 00:46
- And then when you're holding your leader's body,
- 00:48
- you can usually feel them shift their body.
- 00:50
- You can sense that their leg is going out,
- 00:52
- that they're turning their hip to make room.
- 00:54
- And so if your leader's going
- 00:57
- to lead you in some weird gancho, pay attention,
- 01:00
- how do their bodies change?
- 01:02
- And then that will give you lots of forewarning.
- 01:04
- Don't ask, are they leading me into a gancho?
- 01:07
- Let's pretend you're practicing it.
- 01:08
- Ask instead, is there forewarning
- 01:11
- that I can pay attention to next time?
- 01:13
- Just what do I notice about their bodies?
- 01:15
- They're about to lead me to gun show. That's number one.
- 01:18
- Number two, uh, if a leader is standing here
- 01:22
- at this angle, actually, let's be here at this angle.
- 01:25
- There's not a lot of space.
- 01:27
- But if you turn the leader this way,
- 01:29
- there's more space right between the legs.
- 01:31
- And what you do is you turn your hips to say, where
- 01:37
- can I turn my hips so that my leg can find that space?
- 01:42
- And that's true in this back step,
- 01:44
- but it's also true in the side step that the gun show here,
- 01:47
- the gun show, his knee would be right here.
- 01:50
- And you want to go to the side of his knee.
- 01:53
- And so there's two gestures.
- 01:54
- If you're doing a gancho on a sidestep,
- 01:55
- and we'll talk about this more, but the idea is you just
- 01:58
- wanna look for the space wherever it is.
- 02:02
- If my leader's over there,
- 02:03
- and I'm gonna do a gancho, I'm gonna turn my hips
- 02:05
- so I can find that space.
- 02:07
- If my leader is over here
- 02:09
- and I'm gonna do a gancho, I'll turn my hips or,
- 02:12
- and find the space over there.
- 02:14
- There's a leg right here.
- 02:15
- I'll say, oh, I can move my knee over and find the space.
- 02:20
- So that's one useful thing.
- 02:22
- When these GTOs come in unexpected places,
- 02:24
- how can I turn my hips?
- 02:25
- So it's easy for our, for our, uh, for my, our,
- 02:29
- our knees to lock.
- 02:32
- Um, final point is that if you get too far away,
- 02:36
- it's really hard, right?
- 02:37
- So if my leader's here and I try to gancho
- 02:40
- and his legs right here,
- 02:42
- and I'm over here, I'll never reach.
- 02:45
- So part of this is staying really close to your partner
- 02:48
- as you go around, so that when you comes time to gancho
- 02:52
- or rap or whatever it is, uh,
- 02:56
- you don't have to reach for it.
- 02:58
- Stay close. That means you have to pivot a lot sometimes,
- 03:00
- especially on that back step.
