Facing - How to Practice
None
- 00:00
- As you think about facing, one of the things
- 00:03
- that makes it difficult is that it's a bit ambiguous.
- 00:05
- What is it I'm supposed to be doing? Do I just try hard?
- 00:08
- Which is almost never a good answer.
- 00:11
- And the first thing is to say, well, if I'm aware
- 00:15
- of something, if I'm aware of this remote control,
- 00:17
- one thing is to be aware that it's there
- 00:18
- because of my, in my mind, I can visualize it.
- 00:21
- And a different thing is to say why I'm aware of it
- 00:23
- and I'm gonna let it my awareness influence my body.
- 00:27
- And then what you can do to practice is you can be aware
- 00:30
- of remote control, a person,
- 00:33
- and you can just say, how can my awareness change my body?
- 00:35
- And then eventually you can say, well, what if
- 00:39
- that remote control or that person moves, forget footwork.
- 00:44
- It's not about your feet. As they move slowly.
- 00:55
- And you can say, how does
- 00:57
- that influence my body's movement without me feeling
- 01:00
- obligated to actually be looking at them,
- 01:03
- but rather to say they're acutely in my awareness
- 01:06
- and it lets my body move.
- 01:07
- If you have a corner of a room sticking out,
- 01:11
- it's a good place to practice that is around that corner,
- 01:14
- Right? And so that's talking
- 01:15
- about the other half.
- 01:16
- So one is you can move the remote controller, your partner,
- 01:19
- um, and the other is you can move yourself, right? So
- 01:21
- If I stand still and he moves around me,
- 01:24
- Right? She becomes the corner,
- 01:25
- right?
- 01:26
- Then you can have,
- 01:31
- and you get this sense of almost like you're stalking
- 01:33
- prey and then you're gonna hug them.
- 01:37
- And you can do that maybe without the hug,
- 01:38
- with a standing lamp, with, with a,
- 01:41
- a corner of a piece of furniture.
- 01:42
- Just anything pretty much.
- 01:44
- Okay? So that's number one.
- 01:45
- And, and, uh, how to practice this.
- 01:47
- But number two is if you can really be telling yourself a
- 01:50
- story and really be doing that story.
- 01:53
- So if you tell a story of, you know, I'm coming back
- 01:56
- to someone I've missed, and you say, oh,
- 02:00
- I'm coming back to someone I've missed.
- 02:05
- And then that's a story that gives you the sense of, well,
- 02:08
- we went from more away
- 02:09
- to more towards, and it was really real.
- 02:12
- Um, so in some sense you can say it,
- 02:14
- it doesn't even have to be about mechanics.
- 02:15
- It can be how do you express this story in your body?
