We have a few students who call combinations that have the followers going to their left, "dancing on the dark side". It's more difficult because that's the side where the leader has his arm around the follower, so there's less space. Because the body is closer, the step tends to be less forgiving.

For The Leaders: It really helps if you are standing with all your weight on one foot, not split weight. It also helps if the movement is clearly about the turn of the body rather than the movement of the arms.

For The Followers: Because it's the closed side, there is an instinct to step super small. We want you to try to keep the steps on this side the same size as they would be on the other.

All of this is true about the first step in this combination, but it's also true in general about any movement that happens "to the dark side".

Lucio Arce has an authentic caberet feeling to his guitar playing and singing. There are overtones, sometimes, of jazz and playfulness.

00:16
And this step has something I like about it quite a lot.
00:19
Unlike all the other steps, right?
00:20
D: I don't like anything. Not true at all.
N: Right. Which we teach because we don't like them.
00:24
And what I like about this step in particular...
00:26
..is the way that it flows from one thing
to another in this seamless way;...
00:30
..that here's our ocho and here's our walking out.
00:35
And so, then, our elements mix together
in this very fluid way.
00:39
When we do the ocho and then come to the step out...
00:43
..we have to be sure that we take the time to
keep our balance, because it is hard there.
00:47
And maybe lean in from our backs
to our partner a little more.
00:52
So the step, side, he changes...
00:55
..through
00:56
Like left foot basic.
00:58
Here, I'm going to turn to my right,
and that will pivot her around me.
01:03
N: And that's a lot.
D: And then around me.
01:04
Actually - so let me explain that turn.
01:06
So there's turn her, turn, step her.
01:10
So there's two parts actually.
01:11
So, and for the followers
I want you to think...
01:13
..that you finish your pivot
or almost finish your pivot...
01:16
..here. You almost finish this pivot, before you step around.
01:19
Let's show that from another angle
for the followers.
01:23
Oh yes, this is what you don't want to do.
01:25
Pivot a little and step.
01:27
You want to pivot so much
that you can just step back around.
01:32
And you'll notice our distance
stays about the same.
01:34
That's a refrain. We could have a song about
distance staying the same in tango.
01:39
Then we'll righten - Righten means:
we'll unwind the follower.
01:43
And we'll exit, outside partner.
01:45
Just walking into a cross or not. Whatever.
01:50
Let's do it again.
