One thing we are conscious of is that we want each dance to have its own character. Very often, people dance vals or milonga or tango, they are doing the same dance to different music instead of doing different dances to different music.

Part of the purpose of these videos is to give people the vocabulary and style to be able to make each type of dance its own special thing.

From website: Mandrágora Tango is a tango band headed by bandoneonist Bob Barnes and guitarist Scott Mateo Davies, 2 Minneapolis-based musicians who are wildly passionate about tango. We have been playing tango for dancing and listening since 2001 and we are still going strong. We've played in over 40 cities all over the United States.

00:05
So, this chapter is comparing the hover in tango to the hover in vals. In tango vals.
00:10
And, they're very similar, right? It's the same idea, different dance.
00:15
And this makes it a really subtle distinction.
00:17
So, if I were dancing in a tango style, to this vals,
00:29
You get the sense that it holds. There's this control, this containment.
00:33
You go on, it holds - containment. You go on.
00:37
So, I'm... not stopping. There's a lot of containment and... And it's not about the body moving... How do I say this?
00:46
It's not about the wholeness of the body travelling through space, as much as it is containing and moving in this subtle, minuscule way.
00:52
If a... Sideways to the camera:
00:54
Ah... Ugh... You know because of the pained look on the face that it's tango.
00:59
And, if I were to do something similar with a vals feeling,
01:09
So, when I'm hovering here, or I hover here, there's this sense of movement of "Ah!",
01:16
In the whole body. So, it's not as contained and it's more full.
01:21
And part of that's because of the timing, right? So, vals has this continuum:
01:24
*David vocalizes*
01:30
Where's tango is not... that, tango is like...
01:34
..."Ugh", and then, finally, you go.
01:37
I hope that makes as much sense to you, as it did to me.
