Connection in Body - Spirit Body
None
- 00:00
- And now I'm telling you a long story.
- 00:01
- So I, I have some notes,
- 00:03
- and this is a, a story about an imagery,
- 00:06
- which I find very useful.
- 00:08
- And so the first idea that, that in terms of the way
- 00:11
- that you can connect your body to itself, uh,
- 00:14
- so the first question is that,
- 00:17
- or the idea is that your body is mapped, uh,
- 00:21
- like your physical body is mapped
- 00:22
- to different parts of your mind.
- 00:23
- I don't know if, by the way, this may
- 00:25
- all be scientifically wrong.
- 00:26
- It can still be useful.
- 00:27
- Um, so I want our imagery to be that maybe we have a lot
- 00:31
- of nerves in our hands,
- 00:32
- and maybe we have relatively fewer nerves in our elbows,
- 00:35
- and maybe there's a lot of coordination in our hands,
- 00:38
- and they can do lots of things, and they're important to us.
- 00:41
- Uh, and maybe with our elbows they're important,
- 00:43
- but maybe they don't take quite as much room
- 00:45
- as our hands do, even though they're about the same size.
- 00:47
- You know, my, my hand and my elbow.
- 00:49
- Um, so just because a certain part
- 00:51
- of your body has a certain size,
- 00:53
- that doesn't mean it's the size
- 00:54
- that it occupies in your brain.
- 00:57
- Um, and similarly you might say your taste buds
- 01:00
- or, um, might, might occupy more space in your brain than,
- 01:05
- I don't know, your ear lobe.
- 01:06
- And once again, they may be similar sizes.
- 01:10
- And you could imagine that this, the,
- 01:14
- the space in your brain that's dedicated
- 01:16
- to sensing things can change, right?
- 01:17
- So you hear this story of, of like taxi drivers in London
- 01:20
- who have the knowledge of like the streets of London.
- 01:23
- And then there's some tests. And in the process
- 01:25
- of being taxi drivers, there are certain parts
- 01:27
- of their brain which grow
- 01:28
- because then they, they have to do all this memorizing
- 01:32
- of like, spatial things.
- 01:34
- Um, and likewise, you can imagine that the part
- 01:37
- of your brain that's associated with the understanding
- 01:40
- of your center, with, uh, with the use of your back
- 01:45
- and your arms, uh, through your arms may grow.
- 01:49
- Uh, and, and you can have this idea
- 01:51
- that we can have spirit bodies
- 01:53
- and that you can take this like the, the people
- 01:56
- who do anime, the people who do
- 01:58
- cartoons, so they get it, right?
- 01:59
- So if you were to draw a cartoon of this stereotypic,
- 02:03
- nerdy guy, he would have oversized hands
- 02:06
- and an oversized brain and a more shriveled body.
- 02:08
- And you could imagine, well, that's his spirit body,
- 02:10
- and that's what the cartoon is representing.
- 02:12
- Or you could imagine someone who, uh, was a strong man
- 02:17
- and maybe, uh, maybe it's like a bodybuilder,
- 02:19
- but one of those bodybuilders who's not like, uh,
- 02:21
- so amazing, like a tear down, who, who only does upper body.
- 02:24
- He, he ignores leg day.
- 02:26
- He, and he never works his core except incidentally.
- 02:28
- And he sort of walks around like this.
- 02:30
- And in a cartoon, he'll be then even more distorted
- 02:34
- because that's his spirit body.
- 02:35
- And then you can ask, what do you want
- 02:37
- your spirit body to be?
- 02:39
- And, and you can work on it,
- 02:40
- and you can work on it two ways.
- 02:41
- You can work on it, uh, with awareness,
- 02:44
- just by paying attention.
- 02:45
- You can become more aware of it, the brain can develop, um,
- 02:48
- and you can work on it with like physical movement
- 02:50
- and exercise and, and doing things.
- 02:52
- And so you can imagine the spirit body of a,
- 02:55
- a martial artist or,
- 02:56
- or a boxer in their torso being like super solid.
- 02:59
- Uh, and you can manage the spirit body of a,
- 03:01
- a dancer maybe being curved and lines and arcs of energy.
- 03:06
- And when I think about my spirit body and,
- 03:09
- and dancing it, then it becomes not, uh,
- 03:17
- not that I'm doing a gesture, like here's me doing a gesture
- 03:20
- with my physical body.
- 03:21
- It becomes this energetic thing.
- 03:25
- And in my mind, I imagine myself encompassed and,
- 03:28
- and that, that that is my spirit dancing
- 03:32
- and that that can go on sort of to infinity.
- 03:35
- It's not limited by my physical body,
- 03:38
- but just by its intention.
- 03:41
- So play with this idea. I find it a really useful imagery.
