Connection in Body - Internal Awareness
None
- 00:00
- When you dance and your body feels really connected,
- 00:03
- it's a really satisfying experience as well
- 00:04
- as being better dance.
- 00:06
- Uh, but it's a tricky thing to develop.
- 00:08
- And so here's an awareness exercise. You could do something.
- 00:12
- For example, you lift your arm
- 00:13
- and if we just lift arm, let's lift this arm.
- 00:15
- If I just lift my arm like this, uh,
- 00:17
- then really I'm not aware of
- 00:19
- how the arm is connected to the rest of the body.
- 00:21
- I'm just like, oh, look, there's a joint it's coming up.
- 00:24
- On the other hand, if when I lift the arm,
- 00:27
- I can feel the way that it pulls my body
- 00:29
- or the way that my body has to counterbalance, right?
- 00:31
- If I don't do anything and I lift on arm, oh, timber,
- 00:34
- then I go falling off the chair, which you can't see.
- 00:37
- Um, but on the other hand, if as I lift the arm,
- 00:40
- I can pay attention to what happens in my low back,
- 00:45
- you know, I have to do something
- 00:46
- and you say, oh look, my arm and back are connected.
- 00:49
- Or maybe as I lift my arm,
- 00:50
- I can feel like my shoulder gets a little tighter
- 00:52
- and I say, well, do I need to be tighter?
- 00:54
- How does my arm, the raising of my arm relate to my neck?
- 00:58
- It's not actually independent.
- 01:00
- You know, I can put my mind on my back
- 01:03
- and you can even help like I just did with your hand.
- 01:05
- You can put your hand on your back
- 01:06
- and say, as I lift my arm,
- 01:08
- do I feel any change in the muscles of my back?
- 01:10
- And you will, you will.
- 01:13
- And as you put your attentiveness then on this system
- 01:18
- of, of low back and hips and mid back and neck
- 01:23
- and shoulder, all these things
- 01:25
- that are connected to your lifting your arm.
- 01:27
- And you can hold them all with your mind,
- 01:30
- feeling the interconnectedness
- 01:31
- after you work on each of these things.
- 01:34
- And then what happens is it makes your arm
- 01:36
- more connected to your body.
- 01:38
- And then you can start to go the other way.
- 01:39
- You can say, well, what if I don't start my arm
- 01:42
- by thinking about lifting my arm?
- 01:44
- What if I think about my hips
- 01:45
- and my low back as I lift my arm?
- 01:48
- And can I feel both things at the same time?
- 01:50
- My arm and my hips and my low back? Freeing of the neck.
- 01:55
- And I'm saying this with lifting the arm,
- 01:56
- but you could actually do it with, uh, with anything here.
- 01:59
- So you can see the chair, right?
- 02:01
- So you can do it in a chair. There's the evidence.
- 02:03
- Um, but you could, you don't can do it
- 02:05
- with any motion essentially.
- 02:06
- That, uh, is outward. It's just easier with an arm.
- 02:09
- And so you can do it standing too.
- 02:10
- You can sort of lift, lift your other arm so you're not,
- 02:13
- not asymmetrical.
- 02:15
- And here I feel it in my shoulder,
- 02:17
- but now I can feel, oh, there's the shift
- 02:21
- that might want to happen.
- 02:23
- Or there's a counterbalance.
- 02:24
- What am I doing with my center to go the other way
- 02:27
- to take the weight of the arm, play
- 02:30
- with this kind of awareness exercise.
- 02:32
- And then after you play with it, go back back
- 02:34
- to the mapping exercises.
