The Basic - Variations
None
- 00:00
- For students who are more advanced,
- 00:01
- here are three variations on the basic
- 00:11
- right.
- 00:12
- And so that variation, its purpose is to say,
- 00:14
- what if you turn the basics
- 00:15
- so that you stay in line of dance?
- 00:17
- Um, breaking things, uh, uh, let's stay in camera
- 00:22
- breaking things into the smaller parts
- 00:23
- and talking through it rapidly
- 00:25
- after the cross right here, this first step
- 00:31
- starts to turn the second step.
- 00:34
- I'm keeping her at the center
- 00:35
- of a circle as I'm stepping around. So I'm
- 00:38
- Stepping very tight.
- 00:39
- So that gets us a lot of rotation.
- 00:41
- We both change weight and now I'm going back but turning
- 00:45
- and this sidestep, I'm the pencil
- 00:48
- And I step way around him And then we carry on.
- 00:52
- And so the basic idea is in a sidestep one per that,
- 00:56
- if it's turning, one person can make
- 00:58
- that sidestep like a Charlie Chaplin
- 01:01
- or if I were a follower, uh, with the balls
- 01:04
- of the feet while the other person can go around. And
- 01:06
- It's really cool if a, if a basic
- 01:08
- can go in a straight line,
- 01:10
- That's variation number one.
- 01:11
- Variation number two
- 01:13
- I,
- 01:23
- And once again, it turns, this one turns 180
- 01:26
- and the point of this variation is the hip facing,
- 01:28
- actually let's do a, a closeup of that.
- 01:36
- So then right here, she goes to cross,
- 01:38
- she's staying facing me with her hips as I'm taking
- 01:42
- that side step around her.
- 01:44
- That seems really cool to me.
- 01:49
- And then the final variation is just to say
- 01:51
- that crosses don't always have to be quick
- 01:58
- and that you can control the speed of that cross.
- 02:01
- Um, so for leaders don't always get in this habit
- 02:04
- of going da da.
- 02:06
- Right? Right, right. And for followers, uh,
- 02:10
- there's a horrible habit also
- 02:11
- of going, oh, there's the cross.
- 02:14
- Rather than saying, will you lead me?
- 02:17
- Rather than saying in the cross
- 02:19
- and really play with the timing that this
- 02:26
- is a journey and you don't know what it might be
- 02:29
- or where your partner may take you or,
- 02:31
- or where you may take your partner.
- 02:32
- So the point is that we can vary both the amount
- 02:35
- that you go around and the timing of the cross.
- 02:39
- And that makes a lot of variety.
