Milonga Combinations to Build Essense - Hover Step
The reason we teach this step is because we want you to have the sense of falling into something, of suspension and then release. For milonga, this release is a release that has some substance. However, it's also not something one would typically do in milonga (David would, but that's a different thing). The reason why is because, in milonga, you normally step on every beat. And this one doesn't. This means that the lead to say, "don't step; hover" has to be very clear (because it's not normal).
For followers: The hover-lean in the upper body is an opportunity to add a little bit of style or attitude, to express your own opinion about what the move is like.

- 00:20
- And so this step, uh, breaking it down is, uh,
- 00:23
- unusual for Milonga.
- 00:24
- And you said to yourself, why did you wanna do the hover?
- 00:27
- Yes. And, uh, the, the, the real reason is there's this,
- 00:31
- ah, so when I dance, milonga, oftentimes there's this
- 00:35
- 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1. You
- 00:39
- Kind of fall into the one, Right?
- 00:40
- So there's this breath of hovering,
- 00:42
- and then you, uh, fall onward.
- 00:43
- And so it's unusual because usually you step on every beat,
- 00:46
- but, uh, this particular choreography is designed
- 00:49
- to accent that hovering.
- 00:51
- So you really get the sense of sustainment
- 00:52
- to fall into the one, two.
- 00:54
- So if you count
- 00:55
- 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1,
- 01:00
- and that's what we'll be doing.
- 01:03
- So breaking it down, uh, for the leaders, you start, uh,
- 01:07
- just normally facing your partner,
- 01:08
- but you're gonna take it on diagonal.
- 01:09
- So it's gonna go zigzag. So my first step
- 01:11
- is, and then one, two.
- 01:16
- So there's this prep, which is that hover.
- 01:17
- So we're gonna go
- 01:18
- 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2.
- 01:24
- So you'll see before I start,
- 01:26
- or actually rather the beginning is the, before I start.
- 01:28
- So the beginning is this up, turn, hover, step, step.
- 01:34
- And then you, uh, take one more forward, step
- 01:36
- and turn, hover, step, step, uh, different angle, going,
- 01:40
- going, uh, towards your,
- 01:42
- actually, let's going to go this way. I
- 01:43
- Think that's the hard parts for both parties, is
- 01:46
- that the hover step is a twist, is a turn,
- 01:49
- is the same time that you're hovering.
- 01:50
- Yes. Good, good point.
- 01:53
- So I go hover, turn, step, step, hover,
- 01:57
- turn, step, step.
- 02:00
- So really if people, if you, if you have trouble doing
- 02:03
- that, just practice the hover turn a few times.
- 02:05
- And then once you get that in the body,
- 02:06
- the rest of it's gonna be really easy
- 02:09
- For the followers.
- 02:11
- Uh, you're once again doing the mirror opposite.
- 02:13
- How often do I say that? I think you're gonna hold in
- 02:16
- and, uh, on the hover, I want you also to be aware
- 02:18
- of the ion of your thighs.
- 02:20
- And then it goes one, two, you're gonna go back first,
- 02:23
- collect, hover, and then back.
- 02:29
- So that is.
