Hi! Great to hear from you and I hope your having a lot of fun with all of this!

Note that this isn't a social step and is really choreography. It's possible to lead it, but only with someone who knows.

Below is a video with a few additional comments that might be helpful (forgive the poor lighting - wanted to get you a quick answer).

Let us know if you have other questions :)

Very Best!
David

Clarisa Aragon has ownership of her body and dance. Her pivots are easy because her foot placement and ownership of axis is very good. They are controlled because of the way she owns her body.

Particularly impressive is how beautiful she looks during the fast molinette near the end ... a place most women would look terribe, she looks great!

But you see his musicality in any video of him :)

See from 33-45 seconds, for example

Hi Brane,

Thanks! Here you go - let me know if you have any further questions!

Sorry for the tardy reply ... I just now noticed the post. I will reply in a few days. Best, David

In our Wednesday class we have started doing a long combination of beginning material, which we do most weeks. This is so that people can have the frequent repetition to revisit steps that are core beginning material every week. For those that are more advanced, this is time to figure out what they can work on to improve in these pieces of core vocabulary.

See a video of it here:

The combination is:

  • Weight Changes
  • Six Count Basic
  • Traveling back Ochos
  • Walking
  • Weight Changes
  • Front Ochos
  • Eight Count Basic
  • Weight Changes
  • Walking
  • Rocking
  • Resolve

Observe that doing this twice takes more time than 1 song.

Hi Tina!

How great that you asked about embellishments. We think lots of people might be very interested.

Most of the questions in your title are answered in our video series https://learntodancetango.com/videos/category/13/embellishments/

When to embellish is basically when it's inspired by a combination of your partner and the music. And perhaps, the choreography. Just be cautious of doing embellishments for embellishment's sake.

This said, after one month, there are more important places to put your mind. Focusing on learning core vocabulary, tango techniques and how to connect to your partner should be more rewarding.

Thank you so much for asking. We really like it when our students communicate with us. Please let us know if there's anything else we can do to make our website useful.

Very Best,
David (for David and Nancy)

Hi Tina,

You are very welcome! It really is our pleasure.

Hi - here's your answer!

In list form:

  1. Left lat down & left elbow towards the floor
  2. Get high as the leader goes low
  3. Move over the leader's shoulder ("lean" towards and above him with your upper body)
  4. slightly hike your left hip so that it can rest above his right hip (the mechanics of this depend a bit on your relative heights).

I hope this helps. Let me know if there are any questions.

Best,
David

Hi - will reply ASAP... Currently in Hawaii :)

I agree - they are very elegant and good dancers. Amusingly, some of the reason you love them so much is that they have the good taste to have same idol :)

Do you realize that they have studied Orlando Paiva Sr., just as you have? They also stick with Pavia's philosophy of performance ... a lot of simple with a little flash.

If you compare your clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUSpkBulW2k&feature=youtu.be
With the clip of Paiva here: http://learntodancetango.com/videos/resources/articles/5/the-great-dancers-of-old/

Push cross

  • Liz & Yannick: 35 seconds - 50 seconds
  • Pavia: 0-4 seconds

Tail when woman goes around man

  • Liz & Yannick: 1:05 - 1:21
  • Pavia: 2:44 - 2:51

Ah, Paiva is so good!

Fantastic link! That was so! awesome to watch! I've added to the Musicality article.

Also, very interesting ... if you watch him closely, you get a sense for what he wants ... look at how he moves ... that is what he wants the musicians to do ... perhaps, often even more! strident. In some sections, not rhythmic enough.

When listening to music, we can ask not just "what do we hear", but also, "what does this music want to be". Great with songs you know well that are played badly :)

Best,
David

This also reminds me of ballet and the music that it was danced to ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet_%28music%29

Namely, that it started with simpler music, and then the music became more complicated as the dance became more free.

And I think there was some of the same evolution in traditional tango music (going from more simple and rhythmic to more complicated).

I remember hearing a story where someone essentially said "why not dance ballet to the great classical music of this day, instead of to "ballet" music".

Random thoughts :)

Thanks Steve! You're book reviews will help me know what to read ... reading a bunch of tango books is on my to-do list :)

Fascinating, such energy, and from the smaller one, such beautiful lines

And here, now for a real tango :)

This thread will just be a random collection of things that I find that I want to put somewhere, but which don't really deserve an article or video by themselves. Feel free to chime in!

A video where the performer (Singer) has such a great control over the audience ... something to learn here:

A video which is just plain cool (Whistling):

Who knew that whistling could be this?

:)

Steve, you write like a poet! :) Where did Luz train (what school?)? What places teach tango so much for years?

Mariela Sametband is fabulous. She is so clean, and has such a strong center.

Here is one of my favorite videos of her:

How do you embed youtube videos? You have a mad kind of forum kung-fu!

Thanks!
David

Hi Steve,

I think most people say those same things ... see the article:
http://learntodancetango.com/videos/resources/articles/6/key-concepts-for-tango/
We have some things labelled differently (His Steps is our Technique, his Form is our Posture & Body Integration).

But, for example, I think that after you become one of the top 100 tango dancers in the world, technique probably won't be what stands between you and being one of the top 5 ever ... it will probably be body connection or musicality or choreography ... but this is just speculation.

Best,
David
