Any time there is a pivot and then a sense of the partners gathering to step out together, there is an opportunity for a magic "tango moment".

For The Leader: This overturned pivot is a chance to take your follower back to that little girl "dreaming of being a princess" feeling that many of us had as a child. For this, you need:

  • Keep her on her axis or, if you do a small colgada here, hold her firmly
  • Time the beginning of your stepping back for the very moment when she finishes pivoting

For The Follower: To achieve that feeling, you, also, need to have good technique:

  • Pull down lightly on the leader from your back rather than from your arms to maintain balance
  • Stay with your axis aligned over the ball of your foot
  • Lean into his hand with the small of your back (Nancy speaking: I call this "giving the leader your back").

An if you watch the follower's footwork...
00:16
..it's basically the same as a
normal media vuelta except...
00:19
..there's extra pivot.
00:20
Yes which is very nice.
00:21
For the leaders I go,
side, change, forward, left...
00:25
..and then I step around so
we get extra pivot.
00:29
Now if you stepped around more,
would I get more pivot yet?
00:32
I would indeed. Is that a gentle hint?
00:35
Well it's just a suggestion.
00:40
That's really fun.
00:42
So, for the leaders...
00:44
..you start side, change, forward, left.
00:48
She goes back left.
00:50
I pivot. She steps side.
00:51
And up to that point her step is normal.
00:54
Now, as she steps forward,
I'm stepping forward too.
00:57
Watch that.
01:04
Now right here, as she steps forward,
I step forward
01:07
And notice, I am stepping around her front leg.
01:10
Let's do that again.
01:12
Do that with us.
01:15
Side, he changes. We both step left.
She goes around. He pivots to his left.
01:19
Now, as she steps, he steps.
01:22
I'm going to turn to my left,
to make her shift to that foot.
01:26
At the same time, I'm shifting
to my foot which is over there.
01:29
That sounds like a difficult coordination
for the leaders.
01:33
It is. You're right.
01:34
So maybe they should practice it.
01:36
So what is that coordination?
01:37
So this is what you're going to practice.
01:40
You have the foot here, and you say to her...
01:42
..go more as you shift and turn.
01:45
So I'm shifting to this leg,
as I am turning that way.
01:48
This is the theory I have, which is
you can treat learning how to dance...
01:53
..the way I used treat learning music.
01:56
..in that you pick the little hard place...
01:58
..and you just do a couple of steps
that are very hard until you get them in your body.
02:03
And then you add the steps around it.
02:04
When you add the steps around it,
when you get to those couple of extra hard steps...
02:09
..you've already got them in your body
and instead of feeling hard, it flows.
02:12
So one more time, that hard part
for the leaders behind me.
02:16
Let's see. Let's...
02:18
So you've got side, forward,
you rotate your steps around.
02:21
Now here's that hard part.
02:23
I extend as she extends
and then I shift...
02:27
Oh...
Wrong leg.
02:30
One more time, side, change forward left...
02:32
I rotate around her. Now I extend
as she extends on my right leg...
02:35
..and then I shift as she shifts.
02:38
Again, from here.
02:39
I extend as she extends.
02:42
I shift as she shifts.
