As you get better, lead and follow happens through more of the body. In the beginning, you move your hands and then we say, "oh it should come from your chest". Then as you get better yet, it goes outward so that you can have the same quality of lead/follow with a thigh push or a foot push and it has almost the same quality as with the center of your body. Lead/follow stops being so localized. The better you get, the more you can get the same quality with any part of your body.

For the leaders ... eventually you don't have to stop the follower, if you move your foot into position early, so the whole thing can flow.

For the leaders as you do the drag now,
I want you to be aware of...
00:08
..the way that the sort of minutia of foot positioning
and especially finding your balance on one leg...
00:15
..really is empowering.
00:16
And likewise for the ladies,
you need to be very aware of -
00:19
Is your center of gravity split between
both legs or all the way over one?
00:22
And we’re going to talk about that a lot,
as well as other things.
00:30
So as we do this drag, right here
I’m pretty much balanced completely on my left.
00:36
I pivot her around her axis and then see,
I pivot on my left foot.
00:40
And then I take her through.
00:43
And as we’re there, also for the leaders,
I want you to be aware that...
00:47
..if I just hold her down on both feet,
she’s not going to move.
00:50
So I can take my time, I can look at the foot.
I can give her some fuzz,
00:55
And then I can grab the foot.
00:56
And I always take, when I am leading this,
I always take extra time.
01:00
And if you look at our foot position,
you’ll see that right here…
01:04
..her back foot and my front foot are parallel,
so that there’s a nice channel.
01:09
If my foot's like this, I’m eating up the space.
01:12
She can’t get through. I can’t get through.
01:14
But if my foot's like this,
then there’s lots of space.
01:19
Finally, as we take her here for the drag,
often times the leaders you'll be too close…
01:26
..and so you won’t have room.
01:28
So you want to not take her too tight.
01:29
You want her to go around you,
but not too tightly...
01:33
..so that you can be completely balanced
on your left foot, when you grab her foot.
01:38
And then you shift her back and drag through.
