One thing that we haven't talked about with ganchos so far is interesting to think about now that you've done a few ganchos. This is the quality of the contact. So for the followers who are gancho-ing back or the leaders, if you are gancho-ing a follower, think, "do the thighs fit in a pleasing way?" or "is it like a handshake but of the leg?" Similarly, is the pressure reasonable? If you don't contact at all, that's no fun. Or it can be too heavy. Just like a handshake, it can be too hard.

For the gancho-er, even though you don't hang out there, you want the bounce off your partner's leg to be a pleasant experience for both of you.

From website: My Name is Momo Smitt, I am an independently funded/promoted hip hop artist based in Portland, OR. My music covers a wide range of topics from recovery and personal growth to political and environmental issues. Though much of my music is expressed from a first person perspective of opinions and feelings, I also tend to take a narrative, story-telling approach while detailing my experiences through the role of "observer".

00:05
This is Patti and Alex.
They are very beloved students of ours.
00:08
Pattie studied with us for, is it,
two and a half years now?
00:12
Alex for almost three.
00:14
They're going to show a whole ton of different ways
to do ganchos.
00:18
In fact, we’re doing a whole series about ganchos
because everybody always loves them.
00:22
And so, we’re going to have a lot of different variations.
00:24
So, first they’re going to show inside
and outside ganchos the normal way.
00:31
Alright, give it a go.
00:32
And let’s actually have you start
facing the camera here and go for it.
00:44
Okay, and I believe that’s a gancho we’ve taught already.
00:51
And that's not.
00:52
But it’s the same idea that you have her
kicking on the inside of the guys leg...
00:56
..it can be either leg.
00:59
So, when you’re doing the gancho on the first side,
01:02
We’ve talked about that a lot.
01:03
Let's show two ways. So there’s one way where, in the freno,...
01:06
..you’re here and then when she walks over,
kicks, the other leg's on the other side and goes deeper.
01:22
And so that’s sort of the deeper version.
01:24
That’s a harder version.
01:26
For many people harder version, harder on balance.
01:29
If you are doing the other side.
01:37
Right here,
I’m making a comment so I’m pausing them.
01:40
They're like "freeze!".
01:41
Comment: he really overturned her a lot.
01:44
So, for the followers, you really have to think about
pivoting around the guy.
01:47
Otherwise you’ll end up way too far. Keep going.
01:52
And freeze. Actually go into the gancho and then freeze.
01:55
Freeze, okay, don’t move.
01:57
Now I've got you Alex. Patti just sort of unhook,
untangle yourself.
02:00
No no you don't untangle Alex.
02:02
I think David is having way too much fun freezing people.
02:05
Okay now, Alex freeze.
Patti move out.
02:10
So, for the leaders, if you look at his leg,
this is sort of fun.
02:13
If you look at his leg,
you’ll notice the heel is popped.
02:16
It’s turned out at the knee.
The body is back but the leg is forward.
02:19
Is it not the case that
more heel popping is the better?
02:23
The more room it is.
02:25
The more room you get?
02:26
You need at least enough.
02:27
So, if his heel was down, and if his body was forward,
then there’s no room for me to stand here.
02:35
So it pushes her out of the way
and there’s very little room for the ganhco.
02:38
If he picks up his heel, there’s now room.
02:41
And if he moves back a little bit,
there’s now lots of room to kick.
02:45
That was a good gancho David.
02:47
Now let’s do that again.
I like this whole freeze thing. It’s fun.
02:50
So give it a go.
02:52
Yes, yes. Same one.
02:54
Now right there, freeze.
02:58
Now, if he draws his foot back, I want you to notice
that she went around him going back.
03:04
She’s almost turned away from him.
03:05
Notice how open her hips are
and how much she’s going around the circle of him.
03:09
I’m going to do it wrong.
03:12
D: She’s like…
N: Lucky Alex.
03:15
Let’s see you gancho me now.
03:19
A: Nope.
D: Keep going.
03:21
Make it work. Make it work
03:22
Make it work?
03:23
Make it work.
03:25
Good.
03:28
N. That was terrific.
D. Just for fun. You can always make it work.
03:30
And, actually, for real,
if I were to make it work - screw me up.
03:35
If we go into this gancho,
the principal is i want her to go around me.
03:38
But if she doesn’t -
actually make it really big.
03:43
I want them to see that I really have to work.
03:47
Alright and I’m like.
03:48
You’ll send her a postcard.
03:53
Right, so that’s a bad thing.
03:54
But, idea: you want your leg towards the follower’s back leg.
03:57
So wherever she goes…
04:03
N. Good gancho.
D. The passion.
04:05
So, for the leaders, make sure you go to the follower...
04:08
..if she doesn’t go where you expect.
04:09
But, on the other hand, make sure you don’t have...
04:12
..any unexpected surprises.
04:14
So how do you do that, Alex?
04:17
N. Magic.
D. Magic.
04:18
They’re like, "You didn’t tell us we’d have to talk."
04:21
I didn’t. Bad David.
04:24
N: Naughty David.
D: Naughty David.
04:24
So, we go side, change. I want you to think that
you pivot the follower around you.
04:28
So it goes, in my hand you’ll see,
I hold her in so she can’t go away.
04:34
So we go, side change, pivots around,
leg very turned out, bang there’s our gancho.
04:41
Show each once more.
04:46
And we’ll just be here like proud parents.
