We remember hearing a story (don't know if it was true) about how they taught people to play some classical Indian instrument. We think it was the sitar. For years, they didn't play at all but just practiced drumming the rhythms. Only after that did they start actually playing the instrument.

Playing with rhythms in milonga would be a good candidate for this training. Maybe not so realistic. If you are lucky enough to have musical training, then just go at it. If you're not, then make sure you can say the rhythms like a rock and go in and out of them when you want, mixing them at will. That will make help you actually use them dancing milonga.
