This is a very advanced video. It may be so advanced that it's not useful for the overwhelming majority of people.

One of the things we talk about in this chapter is the way the leaders can lead a molinette while on one foot. At first glance, this would seem impossible: "it must be choreography."

We think it's very cool that many of the moves in tango that seem impossible to be lead/follow, that seem impossible to be communicated through touch and the mind, actually are led and are followed.

00:05
So for the leader as we start to talk about
molinette take two…
00:09
..what I want you to be aware of is,
all these things that you need...
00:13
..when you want to do harder stuff.
00:15
So the initial version of the molinette was this.
00:18
And that’s still the way I lead it.
00:19
Where you just paddle - paddle around.
00:21
But often times you’ll see people do molinette...
00:23
.. and they’ll be doing all of this stuff.
00:24
They’ll be going around. They’ll kick.
They’ll kick. They’ll kick again.
00:28
They’ll circle. They’ll cut.
And what let’s them do that.
00:32
And so the first thing is getting her started.
00:35
So it’s really hard to get a follower
starting moving when...
00:38
..you’re on one foot like a stork.
00:39
So instead, you’ll see at the very beginning of
almost any of these fancy things…
00:43
.. I’ll get her going - that’s a different angle.
00:47
I'll get her going while I’m on both feet.
00:50
And then I pick my foot up.
00:52
And then it’s up to us to stay
the same distance away from them.
00:57
Not that we can’t encourage.
00:58
So I’ll encourage the ladies
by shaping my arms...
01:01
..for the distance desired but the lady
still has to know.
01:05
So there’s that. It starts on both feet
with both feet planted.
01:09
So you have a lot of power to get her started,
overcoming that inertia.
01:14
And then once you get her going,
the inertia is in your favor.
01:16
The second thing is the axis.
01:18
Often you’ll see - Oftentimes, I’ll see guys dance
and their dance is like this.
01:24
And here’s them doing a molinette.
And this is not an easy place to balance.
01:30
And so what happens is it limits your options.
01:34
So if you’re here and you’re on axis
then you can do a lot of stuff.
01:39
But if you’re here then it it’s really hard
to be balanced on one foot...
01:42
..which then limits what you can do later.
01:44
So I want you to think that as you’re doing this,
as you go into this molinette…
01:48
..that you’re aware of the verticality of your spine.
And then you can do stuff.
01:51
So next thing - no actually no. Watch this.
Watch how much I stay vertical.
01:58
So you’ll see, I get her going on two feet
and then I float on one foot.
02:04
Now the next thing is sometimes I can
- the third thing I think…
02:09
..is sometimes I can get her going,
even when I’m on one foot.
02:12
So I have no friction.
02:14
I can’t push against the floor in the same way,
but I'll use my body weight; I’ll fall almost.
02:18
I’ll lean just a tiny hair away.
02:20
So if I want her to go that way
and I’m on one foot...
02:23
.. I’ll let it lean this way
and then she’ll get going.
02:26
And I’ll just do it this tiny little bit…
02:28
Otherwise she’ll fall.
02:29
Well no, I’ll lean a little bit and as we go...
02:32
.. I’m exaggerating, but you see that brief lean back.
02:37
So I’ll use that counterweight to keep it going.
02:40
So for example if we do this same version
and we get this going…
02:43
..and I’m flicking up and then here I pull her.
02:47
I set my heel down and then I go again.
02:49
So you think, you go up, you pull,
set the heel down and then go again.
02:53
N: That's cool.
D: And so there's...
02:54
..really the sense that you can use
pull even if you’re off the floor with the other foot.
03:01
And then that can keep things going
while one foot is doing whatever;...
03:04
..kick, kick, kick, wrapping, flap whatever you want.
