There's something that feels especially "tango" about movements which have a pivot and then a perfectly timed breath to the leaders stepping back and the follower stepping forward. There needs to be a sense of suspension at that moment where he steps around and she doesn't step and a sense of moving through at the end of her pivot where the leader steps back and the follower forward.

00:04
This is actually - it’s my favorite of the basic steps.
00:08
And we call it David’s basic.
00:09
But we decided not to name it that
because...
00:11
..most of the combinations we’re teaching
are David’s combinations.
00:14
So we didn't want to make this -
00:15
Stand out - "Oh what? The other aren’t."
00:17
Right.
00:19
It’s got this really cool squiggle in it
that’s very fun.
00:37
And it can turn any degree.
00:38
Right now I’m turning it at 180,
so it’s good for the camera.
00:42
Really what we’re doing,
the first part is we’re delaying the weight shift.
00:46
Normally -
00:47
The weight shift for the man.
00:48
For the man.
00:49
Normally when we do a basic, side, one, two…
00:52
..she crosses and he’ll shift weight.
00:54
But I’m not going to.
00:55
I’m going to step with my right foot
and then I would shift here.
01:00
But instead of shifting,
I step around her and then we go on.
01:06
And for the followers, this gives you the opportunity
to have a beautiful styling with your foot.
01:11
So after that cross, he takes you back
and then he goes around you.
01:17
And you see that beautiful tail that my right foot makes,
as it goes to step forward.
01:36
So once again, showing the last half slowly.
01:46
It goes through for the leader, back for the follower.
01:49
He goes around her. She pivots,
foot makes a tail, we extend.
01:55
Now I want to make one comment for the leader
about going around the follower.
01:58
This comes up pretty frequently.
01:59
I’ll say he goes around her, but what happens is,
your body is wider than it is narrow.
02:06
And so if I go - think what I did
into the camera.
02:10
This is wider than this.
02:14
And so if I go around her and I put my feet here,
but I go straight forward...
02:18
..I’m going to bump into her.
02:20
See that? Can you stand right here.
02:25
So if I go this, straight that way,
I’ll hit her with my right chest.
02:30
Actually let’s do it this way.
02:31
You think I just like moving her.
02:33
So right here if we go forward,
I’d hit her with my chest. Don’t move.
02:36
But if I rotate sideways as I go there -
02:39
Then I have room.
02:40
I can go by.
02:41
And so when I say go around,
you have to rotate the body as well...
02:46
..so you don’t knock the follower
off her axis.
02:48
I think that’s probably the single
most important thing for the leader...
02:51
..and the thing that makes it fun for the followers.
