We've been thinking about what makes us label one thing as "beginner", another, "intermediate" and a third, "advanced". And we've come to these understandings:

  • When something goes off vertical it moves from beginning to intermediate.
  • When you do something while it's off vertical, that moves it from intermediate to advanced.
  • When someone goes where the other used to be and it involves some sort of foot crossing thing, that's advanced (such as cadena or la trensa. We've already planned videos to teach these.)
  • If there is any lead which is very subtle, that, all by itself, moves the combination from beginning to intermediate. An example is the lead in the wrap that controls the follower's leg.
  • Any kick which involves some combination of momentum and body connection around an axis usually requires high intermediate to do quite well.
  • When you start mixing these kicks in unusual ways, we call that "advanced" (boleo-ganchos, kicks through the legs while turning, etc.)
  • If you do anything substantial around a leader or follower's axis, this is intermediate.
  • If you have to keep the follower on axis while moving and the axis is continually changing, then this is advanced. An example: callecita is intermediate but forward/backward boleos while the man walks around the woman is advanced. We call this "dynamic axis".

For years, she would say to me, let’s do the magic flying step.
00:10
And what we’re about to do is the magic flying step.
00:13
It’s - it’s hard to do and it’s even harder to do so it feels right.
00:21
And my point isn’t that - how to say,
yes, you should be prepared to suffer…
00:28
But that’s not the main point.
00:29
The main point is that I want you to
be easy on yourself.
00:34
So if you find, "Oh man this is hard," that’s okay.
It’s supposed to hard.
00:38
On that note.
00:41
Here's the magic flying step.
00:50
One more time.
01:00
So to break it down...
01:02
.. it starts with a side step,
but this is not the normal side step...
01:05
..in a molinette,
where the woman goes on a circle around you.
01:09
So a normal molinette side step
would look something like this.
01:14
And you see her going around me.
01:16
This side step looks like this.
01:22
So you see, she cuts straight by me.
01:24
And what happens is, literally, it's like she's walking
towards you and you go woosh...
01:28
..out of the way.
Except to make her walk towards you...
01:31
..you have to lead this, for the leaders.
01:35
The lead, you're going to hold her in, up
very softly, maybe a tiny inch back, the tiniest of a lean.
01:45
I'll rotate her. And then, for the ladies,...
01:48
..as I'm going to take my left instep
around my right heel...
01:53
..pulling to my left and she's going to
pivot a little bit first, and then step by me.
01:59
Now, as she's stepping by me, once she gets
to the other side, I'll hold in and up.
02:03
Because that becomes the entrace of a lean.
02:06
Well actually, it's more complicated than
a simple lean, right?
02:09
That would be too easy. So instead, I'm walking
around in a circle...
02:12
..so I'm walking in a circle around her.
02:14
And as I do that, I walk very subtly outward,
creating an ever greater lean.
02:20
The trick is to make it not ever happen
at one point in time.
02:25
So, if I do this in slow motion.
02:30
When are we in the lean?
02:33
And you'll say, "I don't know."
02:38
And then you'll say, "Okay you're definitely in the lean."
02:40
And I'll ask, "When did we get there?"
And you'll say, "I don't know."
02:42
It's like the paradox of the heap.
02:44
Even I don't know when we start.
02:46
Right, so the spiral is so gentle,
as it goes outward...
02:48
..that she doesn't know when
the lean's happening.
02:51
N: Until it's there.
D: Until it's there, and it becomes like magic.
02:55
To talk about the differences between this
and a normal lean...
03:00
In a normal lean, you just go straight back slowly.
03:06
However you get there, creating
soft forward pressure.
03:09
But this is harder in two ways, right?
03:11
And it doesn't just get linearly harder,
it gets exponentially harder, right?
03:15
So harder in two ways is like eight times harder.
03:18
It's David math.
03:19
So the first way it's harder is that...
03:22
..in a normal lean, it's just this.
But now we're going in a circle.
03:26
And it has to stay this.
03:27
And it has to stay that. So, as you go in the circle,
even if I keep the distance the same,...
03:33
I have to be aware of the line of pressure,
between the two of our bodies.
03:38
So, as I'm here I am pushing straight through
her center line...
03:40
..and likewise she's doing the same.
03:43
And what will sometimes happen is that we'll
start to slip and fall to one side or the other.
03:47
So for example, I'll be leaning on her and
it will start to slip and it will go...
03:50
"Timber"
N. Oh, David.
03:52
That's scary.
03:53
I'm sorry.
03:54
So as we do that, I want you to be aware,
,both the leader and the follower,...
03:58
..that you can compensate using either arm.
04:00
So for example, if she is leaning on me and
she starts to tip over this way...
04:05
..I'm going to pull with my right arm.
I'm going to push with my left and I will right her up.
04:10
And likewise, she can pull with her left arm -
here we'll do that so you can see.
04:15
So right here, as it starts to tip,
she's really pulling with her left arm...
04:19
..so that she doesn't tip.
04:21
So we can both use our upper body to stabilize.
04:25
The second thing I want to mention,
especially for the leaders...
04:28
..is that, as you go around in the circle,
you have to remember to lean more.
04:33
And now, the exit is just a left foot basic.
04:39
So, to summarize.
