We say this a few times, but you can make essence what you want. Often, we'll have this pull of coming closer and pulling less close (not exactly away) and that's something we think is a nice thing in freno. We mean where the pull of the leader's hips takes him more towards her as the pivot creates more distance. Her hips are more away while her upper body stays to him.

Additionally, the leader can decrease the physical distance by shifting weight to his freno-ing leg, which is a nice effect.

I think, for me, the essence of freno is about
a change of power,...
00:09
...because it's the one normal place
where the decision of when to move…
00:16
..shifts to the woman.
00:17
And the woman is really doing the deciding
about, also, what she’s going to do in the move.
00:21
And for me, it’s about going in some sense...
00:24
..facing a little bit less to facing more,…
00:26
..about the returning even more to your partner.
00:29
N: That’s an interesting concept.
D: Only sort of went away.
00:31
That’s really interesting because
almost always, when we’re in a freno,…
00:34
..we’re going from some place away
and then we’re moving into the greater contact.
00:41
And there’s contact in the upper body here...
00:44
..and there’s contact in the feet down there…
00:47
..and through the whole of the body.
00:48
But, normally, it comes from a place of being away,
for instance, when we pivot into it.
00:56
And about the exchange of powers as it were,
if we’re here in this freno.
01:02
At this point, I’m the king,
normally the leader is the king…
01:06
..but at this point, I’m the king until I
decide to give the power back…
01:12
..which could take all night, if I want.
01:14
Right, I once remember hearing a story
about these two very world famous dancers.
01:20
And the lady nailed the guy down,
I think just having fun with him.
01:26
And, literally, a whole song spent
only at that one freno.
01:30
It’s a fun thing.
01:32
The question is: did he look enchanted
the whole time?
01:34
He probably was laughing.
