Some quick tips to make pivoting much easier.
00:10
First, for the leaders, two things.
00:12
One thing is sometimes the follower will get,
in some sense, stuck…
00:16
..either because the floor is very sticky or
just because of how she pivots.
00:20
And, in either case, I want you to think
of two things.
00:22
First thing is the way that you can stabilise in your hips,
because that will give you strength.
00:27
D. So, if you watch my hips and I’m pivoting her and I’m doing this…
N. Strength, grrr.
00:31
..that’s a lot stronger than if I do this.
00:34
And, you see this sort of loses the strength
in the hip.
00:35
And then, you’ll also notice, if it’s a hard pivot,
I have an outrigger foot.
00:40
So, for example if we’re doing front ochos
and we go…
00:44
..side, he changes - here I’ll cheat,
pivot, step, we’ll step...
00:50
..here, I pivot her leaving the foot out there
so I can stabilize myself.
00:54
Number one.
00:55
For the followers, as you pivot,
there’s a right way to help.
01:00
And so, I don’t want you to help by doing this…
01:02
I knew what he didn't want.
01:04
D:Yes, that’s what you don't want to do.
N: I think I do a really good bad.
01:08
So, instead as we’re going to pivot,
you’ll notice that I’m here and I’m saying…
01:13
..pivot and she’s not moving
and then it pivots.
01:16
So, he goes us both.
01:18
So, don’t help the wrong way.
01:20
On the other hand, if you watch the foot,
and I’m the follower, if you pivot like this,…
01:30
..you see the whole flat of my foot is on the floor,
that’s a hard way to pivot.
01:35
So, instead, I want you to think you pivot like this.
01:39
So, there’s very little surface area of the foot.
01:41
Now, you can tell he’s a scientist.
01:44
The idea being that if there’s less surface area
there’s less friction...
01:48
..which I think is kind of cool and kind of crazy.
01:51
But because - so it fits with the tango look,
which is that we’re always on the balls of our feet.
01:56
But, it also makes it a lot easier to pivot because...
01:59
..we don’t have so much that has to rub
against the floor.
02:02
The other thing is you can sometimes get stuck,
in some sense, if you have a sticky floor...
02:06
...and so, don’t try to go slowly.
If you sort of pop past that hard place...
02:09
.., it becomes a lot easier.
02:11
And that’s kind of confusing because
we say that the followers should not go...
02:15
..and that the leaders should go us…
02:16
..and most of the time that’s correct.
02:18
But, what David's saying is that, in the very beginning,...
02:21
..we just give it a little bit of a fast start
in order to get it past that sticky place.
02:27
Yes. So, for example, if this were a sticky floor,
we might go: and, pop, and then go on…
02:35
..or pop, and then go on,
and that will help you get past it.
02:39
And this is something that the leaders
can do, as well.
02:42
So, you can give the follower extra momentum.
02:44
So, if I lead a slow ocho, it might be - and turn…
02:50
But, if it’s a sticky floor, I’ll say, and turn.
02:53
So, you see that “Ah” at the beginning.
02:56
And so, this is something that both people can do.
02:59
You can both do “Ah” and then go on.
