- We think countering the arms is a big thing. We talk about it first in this chapter but really it's true for all pivots, forward and backwards. So it's also true, though we don't talk about it so much, for gancho, boleo, molinette, media vuelta, etc.
- Countering of the arms is an aide not just to the leader, but also to the follower. The follower can use her (his) own arms as a tool this way.
- The general principle is that the arms should move so that the pressure can translate from the arms into the body. This is such a big principle that we think we'll do a video on it.

- 00:05
- For the followers, in front ochos,
there are a couple of techniques that... - 00:08
- ..really make it tremendously easier to pivot.
But they're hard to learn. - 00:12
- And once you can learn to use both of your arms
to help the pivot happen… - 00:17
- .. the pivot gets so easy.
- 00:20
- Also there are a couple of different ways
to collect the feet as we go around - - 00:24
- ..the one that we teach as a fall back
is fallback and it’s pretty easy. - 00:29
- The other one where you leave your leg out
and then you pivot… - 00:31
- ..and the pivot brings your leg in,
it needs for you to remember... - 00:35
- to keep your thighs really tight together
as you do it. - 00:37
- So you can watch that
when we do it with them. - 00:39
- So let’s do it with you.
- 00:44
- So what I am talking about with
using the arms is… - 00:47
- ..when he pulls, I pull with this arm.
- 00:51
- And then with this arm, I use my hand
so that I can actually leverage this way… - 00:58
- ..or I can push against him.
- 01:00
- And that makes me, even without this arm,
it helps me really do a lot of pivoting. - 01:06
- Now you can talk.
- 01:09
- So as we do this front ocho,
if you watch her left arm… - 01:14
- ..when I go here to turn her -
actually let’s use this angle. - 01:18
- And I’m going to exaggerate.
You can’t notice me do it in really life. - 01:21
- When I go to turn her, you can see with her hand
that she has to pull. - 01:26
- So he’s pulling with his shoulder,
his chest… - 01:28
- ..and I’m pulling with my upper chest
and my arm. - 01:31
- And so that’s that left arm helping her.
And if you look at her other arm… - 01:34
- ..you look at her right arm,
as we go to do the front ocho… - 01:36
- ..right here as I push forward to turn her,
she can push forward as well… - 01:42
- ..using that create that pivot.
- 01:43
- So I’m doing this.
And the combination of those two things... - 01:46
- ..makes way more pivot than I need.
- 01:49
- And likewise we can take this next step.
- 01:52
- And now right here with this left arm…
- 01:55
- ..I’m going to pull her, but she’s going to pull back
and that will help her pivot. - 01:59
- But also with her left arm,
right here as I take her to pivot… - 02:04
- ..you’ll see that she can push with the heel of her hand,
the palm of her hand. - 02:11
- Pull.
- 02:15
- Push
- 02:17
- And that’s a thing to practice.
It’s amazing how much it will give you of extra pivot. - 02:22
- So it’s hard to coordinate
but once you get it,... - 02:24
- ..it helps in a whole bunch of different ways.
- 02:28
- Next thing, with the lady’s leg styling,
one way to do front ocho - - 02:33
- And this is what we teach first.
- 02:34
- - is you collect your feet all the way
and then you pivot. - 02:37
- And then you go forward, you go all
the way over, you collect, you pivot. - 02:47
- And that’s a beautiful way.
- 02:49
- Another way of doing front ocho,
is that you let the pivot be correlated with the collection. - 02:55
- So here she’s not collected
and she’s not pivoted at all. - 02:58
- Here she’s an eigth pivoted
and she’s half collected. - 03:02
- Here she’s half pivoted
and all the way collected. - 03:04
- Almost all the way collect.
- 03:05
- And then it trails around
and extends together. - 03:09
- So you see that the foot
doesn’t collect immediately. - 03:16
- It collects as part of the pivot.
- 03:20
- But really it’s my hip collecting my leg
and that’s a little hard to learn how to coordinate. - 03:25
- But it’s worth it.
